Importing parts from the Thomas Register into NX

The Thomas Register's PartSpec provides a search engine to search a vast database of commercial CAD models provided by their respective vendors. You can download these CAD models for your own use. In the case of NX, you first need to save the PartSpec 3D CAD model as a STEP file. You can then import this file into NX. The following assumes that you have identified the part in PartSpec that you want to import into NX.

Inside Thomas Registry's PartSpec:

  1. Select the "CAD Drawings" tab
  2. Search for your desired part (look for "Product Catalog with CAD")
  3. Select the part you want, eventually selecting "3D"
  4. Under "Download" select "STEP Unigraphics" and then click on "GO>>"
  5. Save the part where you can find it
Inside NX5 and later versions:
  1. From the "File" pulldown menu, select "Import -> STEP203..."
  2. Under "STEP203 File", browse to and double-click on the file you just saved using PartSpec
  3. Select what to "Import to":
    • "Work Part" will import the PartSpec model into your current model
    • "New part" will save the PartSpec model as a new NX part model and not affect the current part
  4. Click on "OK" to start the import process

Inside NX4:

  1. From the "File" pulldown menu, select "Import -> STEP203..."
  2. Click on "Choose Part 21 file"; then browse to and double-click on the file you just saved using PartSpec
  3. Select the "Destination for Import":
    • "Work Part" will import the PartSpec model into your current model
    • "New part" will save the PartSpec model as a new NX part model and not affect the current part
  4. Click on "OK" to accept all the import settings
  5. Click on "OK" to start the import process
