Welcome to the Virginia Tech CAD Laboratory!
Its mission is to provide high-performance computing for interactive CAD/CAM/CAE education and research, open and free to all majors at Virginia Tech.
This facility has been provided by and is operated by the Virginia Tech Computing Center (1983-2001) and Learning Technologies (2001-present).
Quick Picks:
- create an account -- just log onto a workstation using your VT PID and password

SYSTEM NEWS
November 14, 2007: We are having a problem with the computer that we use to program the VT CAD Lab front door card reader. Until this is corrected, we will not be able to add new users/cards to the card reader. We aim to have this problem corrected by November 26, 2007.
October 24, 2007: The sound hardware driver on the Dell OptiPlax 745 workstations have been disabled because it causes the workstations to crash on startup 70% of the time. The problem is that Dell ships their 64-bit systems with 32-bit sound hardware drivers, and Dell apparently has no plans to provide a 64-bit driver. Hence, until further notice, please use your tablet PC if you need to use Skype.
October 23, 2007:
Hardware upgrade is mostly complete. The VT CAD Lab servers are now online again.
We have now added a local 1000-Mbit/sec network connection to each workstation for
accessing the local servers, in addition to the existing 100-Mbit/sec network connections to the
outside world. This network upgrade has dramatically cut the time it takes to upgrade the software
on the workstations, and it provides significantly better performance on the workstations when
users access their data on the servers.
ONGOING: As we finish off the last few details this network upgrade, we should also see
improved the response of the Teamcenter Community and Teamcenter Engineering servers.
The network upgrade will hopefully be completed by the end of 2007 (including the installation of
additional servers for Teamcenter Community and Teamcenter Engineering).
August 13, 2007: We are today replacing the aging Dell Precision 360 workstations in the VT CAD Lab with new Dell Optiplex 745 workstations. These workstations will increase the processing power by 130% as we move from 1GB RAM to 4GB RAM, from 1-CPU systems to 4-CPU systems, and from 19" monitors to 24" monitors.
